The first step for treatment of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction and posterior tibial tendinitis is the use of a device for stabilization of the foot and arch. The Aircast is an efficient and proven device that reduces the range of the motion of the subtalar joint located beneath the ankle. The Posterior Tibial tendon is the main tendon that provides stabilization of the subtalar joint, so when this tendon is weakened, a device like the Aircast can help stabilize the joint and thereby reduce the pressure on the tendon. A wonderful device that we recommend specifically for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is the PTTD brace, it is specially designed to reduce pain in the posterior tibial tendon region and is an excellent brace for providing support. Many may also benefit from the use of a cream or ointment to hopefully reduce some degree of the discomfort and inflammation.
In more chronic cases the Achilles tendon can sometimes become secondarily over-contracted and shortened. In order to prevent this from occurring, night splint is generally recommended.
